Slow Cedar

First frost on the herb bed

October 24, 2026

The forecast said four degrees, so I left the sheet in the shed. By six the thyme was silver and the basil, which I had been meaning to bring inside for a week, had gone dark at every edge. The rosemary did not seem to notice.

Lesson for next year, written down so I actually remember it: basil comes in at the start of October, not the end. Sage and thyme can stay out. Cover the parsley if the night is clear and still, because that is when the cold settles lowest.

The cedars along the fence looked exactly the same as yesterday. That is the thing I like about them.
